Structural Post & Beam Carpentry

Traditional timberframing or structural post and beam carpentry, is the method of making a structural post and beam frame that is load bearing. The beams within the frame are connected using traditional mortice and tenon joints and secured with wooden pegs.

Timbers used are predominantly green, i.e fresh sawn. European Oak & Douglas Fir are used mostly in the northern
hemisphere, whereas Cypress Pine and Red Ironbark are the most commonly used in the southern hemisphere, due
to their natural termite resistant properties, making it unnecessary to treat them with harmful chemicals.

A design and build service for small scale timber frames, such as garden shelters, sheds, garages, studios and bridges
is available, including design for planning approval and engineering. Frames are constructed in a workshop and
erected on site.

Combined with modern building technologies, traditional timber frames offer unique building possibilities.
